In 1924, in Great Britain, Cyril French, together with brothers Leonard and Edgar, established “The Electrical Manufacturing and Plating Company”, helping Eric Mackintosh to improve his invention – one of the first cone loudspeakers. The Celestion loudspeaker was introduced to the market in 1925 and was positively reviewed by “Popular Wireless” as “a high-class instrument capable of high-class performance”. By the end of the 1920s, the company was developing rapidly, offering, among other products, luxury gramophone models. Cyril French and Eric Mackintosh left Celestion in the early 1930s, and in 1935 the worldwide recession had a major impact on the company. The loudspeaker market shifted from large, separate units to small speakers mounted inside radio receivers. During World War II, both Celestion and British Rola, a subsidiary of the American Rola company, were restricted to producing a single type of loudspeaker. Rola manufactured its speakers in Thames Ditton, while Celestion operated from its factory in Kingston-upon-Thames. British Rola acquired Celestion Ltd in 1947, and the company name was changed to Rola Celestion Ltd. “Celestion” was registered as a trademark. Two years later, Rola Celestion was acquired by Truvox, which introduced public address systems to the company?s product range.<\/p>\n

Celestion Ditton 44 are among the most characteristic British loudspeakers of the 1970s and, at the same time, one of the most successful models from the legendary Ditton series. They were created during a period when Celestion was one of the most important British loudspeaker manufacturers, and the company’s designs gained enormous popularity not only in Great Britain but also throughout the European market. Ditton 44 are a large three-way design using a 12-inch woofer, Celestion’s characteristic midrange driver and the HF2000 dome tweeter. The HF2000 in particular is today one of the most recognizable classic Celestion drivers and was also used in the more advanced Ditton 66 model. The large cabinet and 30 cm woofer allow the Ditton 44 to produce deep, full and extremely natural bass, which is distinctly different from the way low frequencies are presented by most modern, significantly smaller loudspeakers. The bass has proper weight and scale, but does not overwhelm the midrange and integrates very well with the rest of the frequency range. The midrange is one of the greatest strengths of this model. Vocals are full, natural and presented at the proper position in the soundstage, while acoustic instruments retain their natural timbre and appropriate scale. The high frequencies reproduced by the HF2000 are detailed, spacious and delicate, without unnecessary aggressiveness. Ditton 44 do not try to impress with artificially emphasized detail. Their greatest strengths are coherence, naturalness and a very pleasant, full-bodied sound. They are capable of creating a large soundstage and reproducing the scale of a recording with great ease, which makes them particularly well suited to rock, jazz, blues and recordings featuring live instruments. This is a classic example of the British school of loudspeaker design from the 1970s – a large cabinet, a large woofer, high-quality drivers and a construction designed above all for natural music reproduction. Even after several decades, Ditton 44 remain highly regarded vintage loudspeakers and perfectly demonstrate why classic Celestion designs still have so many enthusiasts today.<\/p>\n

The cabinets have undergone a complete revitalization. The teak wood gives the speakers an exceptional appearance. New grilles and speaker terminals have been installed. The wood has been finished with Chinese oil produced from natural oils and natural beeswax based on turpentine. The wood is extremely pleasant to the touch. A new front panel has been manufactured using CNC technology. The metal elements of the speaker cabinets have been cleaned and painted using professional automotive wet-painting techniques. The drivers have undergone a complete restoration.<\/p>\n

The crossovers have undergone a complete recap, with all capacitors replaced while retaining the original circuit design and component values. All capacitors in the high-, mid- and low-frequency sections have been replaced with high-quality Miflex MKP series capacitors.<\/p>\n

Miflex MKP series capacitors are high-quality polypropylene film capacitors designed, among other applications, for use in audio circuits and loudspeaker crossovers. They are characterized by low losses, high parameter stability and excellent durability. The use of MKP13 and MKP16 series capacitors allows the natural character of the speakers to be preserved while improving transparency, precision and control of the sound.<\/p>\n

After the complete crossover recap, the Celestion Ditton 44 retain the full, natural and extremely musical sound characteristic of the finest British designs of the 1970s, while gaining significantly greater transparency, precision and better control across the entire frequency range. The use of high-quality Miflex MKP13 and MKP16 capacitors allows the full potential of these speakers to be revealed without changing their original sonic character. The greatest difference can be heard in the midrange and high frequencies. The midrange becomes more open, transparent and better defined, while vocals and instruments gain greater naturalness and separation. The high frequencies are cleaner, more detailed and spacious, while remaining delicate and free from unnecessary harshness. The large 12-inch woofer continues to provide the deep, full and powerful bass characteristic of the Ditton 44. After the crossover restoration, however, the entire frequency range becomes better organized, making the low frequencies more articulate and better integrated with the midrange. Soundstage and instrument localization are also improved. The soundstage becomes more open and better organized, while individual instruments are easier to locate. Most importantly, however, the recap does not transform the Ditton 44 into modern-sounding loudspeakers. They retain their slightly warm, full and extremely pleasant character, but the sound becomes more transparent, dynamic and precise – exactly as these speakers should perform with properly operating crossovers.<\/p>\n
