In 1924, in Great Britain, Cyril French, together with brothers Leonard and Edgar, established “The Electrical Manufacturing and Plating Company”, helping Eric Mackintosh to improve his invention – one of the first cone loudspeakers. The Celestion loudspeaker was introduced to the market in 1925 and was positively reviewed by “Popular Wireless” as “a high-class instrument capable of high-class performance”. By the end of the 1920s, the company was developing rapidly, offering, among other products, luxury gramophone models. Cyril French and Eric Mackintosh left Celestion in the early 1930s, and in 1935 the worldwide recession had a major impact on the company. The loudspeaker market shifted from large, separate units to small speakers mounted inside radio receivers. During World War II, both Celestion and British Rola, a subsidiary of the American Rola company, were restricted to producing a single type of loudspeaker. Rola manufactured its speakers in Thames Ditton, while Celestion operated from its factory in Kingston-upon-Thames. British Rola acquired Celestion Ltd in 1947, and the company name was changed to Rola Celestion Ltd. “Celestion” was registered as a trademark. Two years later, Rola Celestion was acquired by Truvox, which introduced public address systems to the company’s product range.<\/p>\n

During the 1950s, loudspeaker production reached approximately 30,000 to 35,000 units per week. In the following decade, the rapidly developing live music market led to the enormous success of the G12, which eventually became famous as a guitar speaker used, among others, by The Beatles. In 1964, the Ditton 10 was introduced, offering a level of sound quality that until then had only been possible from loudspeakers with large and heavy cabinets. The Ditton 15 appeared two years later and became the best-selling “bookshelf loudspeaker” of its time. In 1979, the name Celestion International was adopted for the parent company and all major overseas subsidiaries in France, West Germany and the USA. Further investment in technology, including the use of scanning and laser measurement systems, enabled Celestion engineers to introduce previously unknown solutions in loudspeaker design, many of which remain trade secrets to this day. In 1984, the high-performance Sidewinder series of guitar speakers was introduced.<\/p>\n

In 1992, Celestion International Ltd. was sold to Kinergetics Holdings (UK) Ltd. In 2003, the manufacturing operations of Celestion and another company acquired by the corporation – KEF – were combined under KH. Today, they jointly form Gold Peak Acoustics UK. Celestion International Limited continues its tradition of research and development of the highest-quality loudspeakers. The Ditton 66 is a loudspeaker designed by Celestion in the 1970s according to the highest standards of sound accuracy. It is distinguished by a smooth and exceptionally wide frequency response as well as a low level of distortion – less than 0.7% throughout the bass and midrange frequencies at normal listening levels. The elegant and tall proportions of this model allow maximum cabinet volume to be achieved while occupying a minimum amount of floor space. High frequencies are handled by the HF2000 tweeter, while the midrange is reproduced by the MD500 pressure-dome driver. The Ditton 66 achieves its impressive bass performance through the combination of the FC12 bass driver and a 12-inch ABR (Auxiliary Bass Radiator) working within a carefully damped cabinet. Together, these elements create an acoustic system capable of smooth operation down to frequencies well below 40 Hz.<\/p>\n

The cabinets have undergone a complete revitalization. American cherry wood gives the speakers an exceptional appearance. New grilles and speaker terminals have been installed. The wood has been finished with Chinese oil produced from natural oils and natural beeswax based on turpentine. The wood is extremely pleasant to the touch. A new front panel has been manufactured using CNC technology. The metal elements of the speaker cabinets have been cleaned and painted using professional automotive wet-painting techniques. The drivers have undergone a complete restoration.<\/p>\n

The crossovers have undergone a complete recap, with all capacitors replaced while retaining the original circuit design and component values. All capacitors in the high-, mid- and low-frequency sections have been replaced with high-quality Miflex MKP series capacitors.<\/p>\n

Miflex MKP series capacitors are high-quality polypropylene film capacitors designed, among other applications, for use in audio circuits and loudspeaker crossovers. They are characterized by low losses, high parameter stability and excellent durability. The use of MKP13 and MKP16 series capacitors allows the natural character of the speakers to be preserved while improving transparency, precision and control of the sound.<\/p>\n

After the complete crossover recap using Miflex capacitors, the sonic character of the Celestion Ditton 66 remains true to everything for which this model is highly regarded, while gaining greater transparency, control and precision. Replacing the capacitors in the high-frequency section with Miflex MKP13 provides a cleaner and more open top end. The high frequencies are better defined, more detailed and spacious, without unnecessary harshness. The characteristic smoothness of the Ditton 66 is preserved, while there is more air and information in the highest frequencies. The midrange section, after the installation of Miflex MKP13 capacitors, gains primarily in naturalness and clarity. Vocals become more present, instruments are better separated, and the soundstage becomes more organized and spacious. The Ditton 66 retain their full and musical presentation, but the midrange becomes less subdued, allowing more of the subtle information contained in the recording to be heard. In the low-frequency section, the use of a 75 uF Miflex MKP16 capacitor improves bass control and definition. The low frequencies retain the scale, weight and depth characteristic of the Ditton 66, but become better organized and more precise. Most importantly, however, the purpose of the recap is not to change the character of the Celestion Ditton 66. The speakers retain their classic, full and extremely musical sound, but operate with greater transparency, dynamics and control across the entire frequency range. The result is a more open and better organized presentation without losing the character for which the Ditton 66 have been appreciated for more than fifty years.<\/p>\n
